Moving domain to nchagnet.eu
After a long time blogging through Cloudflare Pages, I have finally decided to move to my own domain and VPS! The new address for this blog is nchagnet.eu.
For now nchagnet.pages.dev will still redirect to the new domain and eventually I’ll sunset it. I decided to migrate away from Cloudflare altogether and give a shot to Hetzner, a rather good EU-based hosting provider. I’ve heard lots of good things about them so we’ll see!
The main thing I was look for was a more permanent domain which isn’t plagued with crypto-scams. Plus I figured if I kept bouncing between different hosters until I found one that’s just right, having my own domain would come in handy. Whatever TLD I would choose had to be cheap: this is a hobby and I really don’t want to pay more than a few euros per year just to keep a domain. This immediately removed from consideration any of the ‘hot’ TLDs like .io, .dev, etc. I figured I might as well go for a local TLD, these tend to be cheap and they have some cachet.
I couldn’t decide between .fr and .nl: the former was a nice wink to my roots and could be a sort of permanent link to my homeland, while the latter would symbolize the place I chose to settle in. The main drawback of either of them would be the implicit expectation of the language the blog may be written in. In the end, I went for .eu. It was the same price, and instead of choosing between two parts of who I am, it felt more like embracing the diversity I live in. I am French, I live in the Netherlands, my wife is Italian: I feel a lot more ‘European’ than any single nationality at this point. And while I don’t know where life may take me in the future, I’m pretty sure it’ll be somewhere in the EU.
TL; DR: The new address for this blog is nchagnet.eu so update your bookmarks/rss feeds and see you there!
